Following X's example, Threads tests AI-powered summaries of popular subjects

As Bluesky, the Twitter-like social network, experiences a notable surge in users this month, Meta’s Threads, its own X competitor, has been actively expanding its platform. On Friday, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that Threads will begin testing AI-powered summaries of trending discussions in the app’s “Trending Now” section within the U.S.

These new features appear reminiscent of X’s Stories, which utilize Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, to summarize trending topics in the Explore section.

Threads will also trial an expanded set of trending topics, along with search functionalities that allow users to filter results by specific dates and search for posts from individual accounts.

In a post on Threads, Mosseri described these updates as “long-overdue improvements” to search and trending features. Meta has been acting swiftly to enhance Threads, particularly as many X users have migrated to Bluesky, which recently surpassed 20 million users.

The rise in Bluesky’s user base coincides with X adopting a more right-wing stance, especially following Musk’s campaign-related activities on the platform during the U.S. presidential election.

Following user feedback regarding Threads’ algorithm, the platform has introduced updates aimed at displaying more content from accounts users follow in their algorithmic feed.

This week, Threads also launched custom feeds, enabling users to curate content based on specific topics or profiles, positioning it to compete with Bluesky’s capabilities for personalized feeds and algorithms.

While Threads retains a much larger user base with over 275 million monthly active users, data from market intelligence firm Similarweb indicates that Bluesky is catching up in terms of daily active users.

If Bluesky maintains its current growth trajectory, there’s potential it could eventually close the gap with Threads.
