Bluesky adds security against username squatting and an mentions tab to the notifications interface

Bluesky, the social network, has released a new update for its app, introducing a dedicated mentions tab in notifications, stronger protections against username squatting, and enhanced controls for organizing replies.

With the v1.96 update, Bluesky now features a separate mentions tab, making it easier for users to view mentions separately from other notifications. Previously, all notifications were consolidated into one tab.

To combat username squatting, Bluesky is reserving users' original usernames with a (.bsky.social) suffix when they switch to a custom domain. The platform will only retain the most recent username, which remains permanently reserved.

A recent issue highlighted concerns related to impersonation, as users bought domain names to reserve usernames linked to well-known individuals who hadn’t yet joined the platform. Previously, users switching to custom domains were required to create separate accounts to protect their original usernames.

Additionally, Bluesky now offers options to display replies under posts, allowing users to choose between linear and threaded views. Replies can be sorted using filters like hot, oldest, newest, most-liked, and random.

With over 25 million users, Bluesky is also expanding translation support, adding Nepali, Khmer, and Romanian to its growing list of languages.
