YouTube announced on Thursday that its Dream Screen feature for Shorts now enables the creation of AI-generated video backgrounds.
Previously, Dream Screen could only generate image backgrounds. The new capability has been made possible through the integration of Google DeepMind’s AI video-generation model, Veo, which can produce 1080p video clips in various cinematic styles.
Users can now use this feature to transform text prompts into AI video backgrounds. To access it, go to the Shorts camera, tap the “green screen” icon, and select “Dream Screen.” From there, you can enter prompts like “candy landscape” or “magical forest with a stream,” choose an animation style, and tap “Create.”
The Dream Screen tool will generate a selection of video backgrounds that you can pick from. Once selected, you can record your video with the AI-generated background behind you. YouTube states that this new feature can be used for activities such as placing yourself in the setting of your favorite book or creating animated openings for Shorts.
In the future, YouTube plans to allow creators to generate six-second standalone video clips using Dream Screen for Shorts.
It’s noteworthy that YouTube is offering a feature that isn’t available on TikTok, the leading platform for short-form videos.
While TikTok allows creators to generate AI-powered background images, video backgrounds remain unavailable.
The new feature is currently accessible in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
